If you’ve been following our 60 seconds with series, then you know we like to use these posts as a way to highlight the unique individuals who make Maptek a great place to work. For this month’s post, we’re still staying true to that message, but we’re adding something new—video! For this video debut, we’ll be featuring Nick Venter, Director of Sales in the USA. Read on for a brief introduction then check out our 60-second interview to hear a few things from Nick himself.
Position: Director of Sales, USA
Background/expertise: Mining Engineer with Coal Underground and Open Pit experience
Years of mining experience: 16
Joined Maptek: November 2011 at Maptek Africa in Johannesburg
Nick first became interested in mining because of his family. His uncle and cousins had jobs working in coal and gold mining and with their guidance, Nick was able to get a job working in production. After receiving a bursary, Nick began studying Mining Engineering at the University of Johannesburg and shortly after, put his degree to work by taking a job at a mining contracting company.
Following his time at the mining contracting company, Nick decided to explore the mining technology sector and joined the Maptek team at the Johannesburg office in 2011. Ever since then, Nick has been hooked on mining technology. He enjoys his work and is passionate about providing innovative software and hardware solutions to the mining industry. Nick has recently moved from South Africa to the USA and has joined the Maptek team in Denver, CO as the Director of Sales.
Check out this 60-second video to find out what Nick has to say about his current role, the major projects he’s been working on recently, and the key lessons he’s learned in his career so far.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to work with a great team of people that makes the workplace a lot of fun. Everyone is always ready to help tackle our clients’ problems together.
Q: What major projects have you been working on recently?
A: The major projects I’m currently working on is learning the market here and what our clients need and want more of. We’ve seen some good successes particularly with BlastLogic and Sentry in Africa and there’s a lot of interest in those two solutions in the States as well. I am also really excited about our solutions like Online Training and Epoch.
Q: Do you have any key lessons you’ve learned in your career that you’d like to share?
A: Some of the key lessons I’ve learned, is that you have to set career goals and share that with the company you are working for. If the company doesn’t know where you want to go, they might not offer you a career path that stimulates and makes you happy. That’s always served me well at all the companies I have worked for so far.
